Pontoon Seats

February 18, 2023 by Staff

Pontoon seats play an important role in making your ride a comfortable one. If you are somebody looking for pontoon seats for your new pontoon boat or looking for replacement options, you are never short of options. The market is flooded with options. What you need to look for is the best option suiting your pontoon boat layout. In this article we will help you out in this.

What to look for when buying pontoon boat seats?

As said earlier, the pontoon boat seats for your pontoon boat depend on the layout of your pontoon boat. There can be lounge style seats, captain’s chair, fishing chairs, corner seats, high back seats, etc. Whatever be the type, you must always look for seats made from quality fabrics which are durable. Being waterproof and UV resistant can make the pontoon boat seat last longer. Look for comfortable options. Budget is also something important. There will be good budget options if you are somebody thinking in budget. Warranty should also be looked for.

Types of Pontoon Boat Seats

Here we present some of the common types of pontoon boat seats.

Folding Seats

Folding seats are single seater which provides a sturdy platform to fish.   They are usually placed in pontoon deck corners, but can be installed anywhere. They can be mounted on the existing pedestal platforms. As they are folding in nature, they are compact. They may not be so comfortable for you to sit for long hours. They also do not offer the best support.

Bucket Seats

Bucket seats are more comfortable and supportive when compared to Folding Seats. The sides of the seat form a half closed shell. Bucket seats are safe and stable and hence used as captain’s seat.

Captain’s Seat

These seats are usually swiveling in nature. This allows the captain to turn about and also have a clear view.

Lounge Seats

Lounge seats offer more space. They offer great support with the comfy backrests. The base of these seats can have storage compartments. As the size of the pontoon boat increases, the layout will include more lounge seats. They are great in giving luxurious comfort. They can have cup holders.

Bench Seats

These versatile seats can accommodate more people. When equipped with folding back rests, they are even better. They can also come with storage compartments.

Fishing Seats

There can be fixed as well as portable variations of the fishing chairs. They are designed in such a way that the angler receives a great amount of lumbar support.

Low Back Seats

They provide more lumbar support to the lower back and mid back. They offer no support to the upper back, neck and the head regions. They are not so good for long sitting hours.

Mid Back Seats

They have a larger backrest which can come up to the shoulder or neck height. They offer necessary support to the curve of the spine, thereby protecting lower and mid back regions and also to the shoulder area.

High Back Seats

The backrest extends to the upper back. There can also be a neck or headrest.  They are more adjustable and offer great support to all parts. They are well suited when you spend more hours outside.

How to maintain pontoon boat seats?

Pontoon boats can be used for a wide variety of water recreational activities. All this can make the pontoon seats prone to water. Though they may be waterproof, yet there is chance of mold or mildew growth over time. So as prevention is better than cure, good maintenance can reduce a toll on the maintenance costs.

Pontoon boat seats need to be cleaned after every outing. You can use water and soap for cleaning the pontoon seats. In case of mold/ mildew, you can also use non chlorine mold/ mildew cleaner spray. On application of the spray, the mildew/ mold will dissolve so that it can be removed by a sponge. Never use any scrub brushes or sponges which are abrasive in nature as they can scratch the upholstery, making the surface more prone to the attacks by mold/ mildew. With good maintenance, the pontoon boat seats can provide the right vibe for your pontoon boat, even adding on the appearance.

Pontoon Decks

July 23, 2022 by Staff

Introduction

Pontoon boats are excellent for recreational water activities, like waterboarding, tubing, etc. However, all these will not be possible without a deck. A pontoon deck is a major component of pontoon boats. It provides the boat with good structure and support for its components and also makes the boat attractive and classy. Pontoon decks are the sitting structure for most parts of the boat, from the railings, seats, and boot tops, all rest on the deck.

Since decks provide pontoon boats with structural support, they have to be sturdy, strong, and properly installed. In all these, choosing the one that fits the appropriate purpose, is of the right material, and has the perfect design is crucial.

This guide gives an in-depth review of pontoon decks, types, sizes, installation guidelines, and how to maintain a pontoon deck.

Pontoon Decking Materials

The deck of a pontoon boat is very important. Among other things, the deck gives the boat structure and support. A bad deck equals poor boat stability and an overall bad water experience. Typically, a boat’s deck is the foundation for all other boat parts; the seats, railings, roof, etc., are all attached. Therefore, the quality of its material needs to be strong and durable. In summary, a strong deck equals a strong boat. The following paragraphs highlight the best materials for a pontoon deck.

Aluminum

Many pontoon boat manufacturers majorly use aluminum. One of its outstanding properties is that it is rot resistant. This is an important quality and a major factor affecting all other materials for boat decks. Decks made from aluminum are light, and they don’t require covering as it is attractive, which saves more money on the part of the boat owner. Also, with an anodized coating, they have good resistance against fading.

Pros

  • It is light
  • Aluminum is easy to maintain.
  • Rust proof.
  • Doesn’t require covering.

Cons

  • Poor strength and rigidity.
  • A poor insulator of both sound and heat.
  • Slippery when ice forms on it.
  • It is expensive.

Plywood

Plywood is simply structural sheets of wood glued together with their grains arranged side-by-side at right angles. Most plywoods do not need to be coated before installation and are often glued firmly to each other. Also, they are kiln-dried to prevent them from wrapping or rotting.

Plywood is durable and long-lasting. Decks made from it are waterproof, rot-resistant, and attractive. However, two types of plywood are used for pontoon decks; the Marine-Grade plywood and the treated plywood.

Marine-Grade Plywood

The marine-grade plywood is a good material for decking pontoon boats. It is strong and highly durable. It is also lightweight and comes with waterproof glue, which gives it a level of waterproofing quality. Furthermore, it is strong and free of defects. Gluing also provides it with a level of resistance against rot.

Pontoon decks made from marine-grade plywood are often long-lasting and durable. They have high water resistance which also means they are not prone to rot. Decks made from marine-grade plywood can withstand tough environmental conditions.

Pros

  • It is strong and durable.
  • Lightweight.
  • Comes with waterproof glue.
  • Defect-free.

Cons

  • Requires sealer to be water-resistant.

Treated Plywood

These decking materials have been treated with synthetics to forestall water damage, rot, and decay. Most people pick this material because it’s promptly accessible and simple to work with. The chemicals used make the treated plywood durable and resistant to fungal, termite, and bacteria damage.

Unlike the marine-grade pontoon decks, treated plywood decks are chemically treated and water-resistant. They also have high resistance against wood-eating insects like termites, bacteria, etc. In addition, they are long-lasting and durable.

Pros

  • It is water-resistant.
  • It has high fungal resistance.
  • Relatively inexpensive.
  • It is durable.
  • Very easy to use.

Cons

  • It is heavy.
  • Needs shielding equipment while cutting.

Vinyl Boards

Vinyl board is one more great choice material for decking boats. It is becoming increasingly used among boat manufacturers. They are made essentially of plastics, and so they are water-resistant, highly attractive, comfortable, and very easy to maintain.

Decks made from vinyl boards are strong, and skid-proof while also giving the boat a classic and beautiful look. Generally, they are just perfect for pontoon decks.

Pros

  • It is durable.
  • Waterproof.
  • Skid proof.
  • Easy to install and smooth maintenance

Cons

  • It is expensive
  • Requires specialist installation.

Composite Board

Composite board is an exceptionally famous material that comprises wood and plastic. It adds a perfect finish to a boat when used for decking. Pontoon decks made from composite boards are strong and durable. However, as a decking material, composite boards have different types, and they include:

Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF): This composite board is from wax and gum. Its high tension and high-heat treatment match its wax content, making it thick and strong.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB): This board is water-resistant, termite free, strong, and durable.

Pros

  • Easy to maintain.
  • Durable.
  • Light.
  • Insect-resistant.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • It needs support underneath.
  • Susceptible to molds.

Length of Pontoon Decks

Deciding a deck size for a pontoon boat can be a hard choice. It’s important to know how many individuals the boat will be moving and the size of the water body the boat will be on. Furthermore, the purpose of a pontoon boat is a big determinant of the deck size. There are certain sizes of pontoon decks available in the market. They all have different applications and suitability. They include:

  • Seventeen feet to 19 feet: This is the perfect deck size for small gatherings of friends and family between six to eight persons. It’s perfect for water bodies that are calm and small.
  • Twenty feet to 22 feet: This deck size can accommodate around twelve occupants. It is appropriate for small water bodies like lakes and streams that don’t have huge waves.
  • Over 22 feet: The bigger 23 to 28-foot decks are fit for cruising through difficult water terrain and high waves and provide sufficient room for up to 15 persons.

Maintaining Pontoon Deck Flooring

Boat floors deteriorate quickly if care and attention are not adequate. The flooring of a pontoon deck is expensive and receives the most traffic on the boat. Therefore, if proper maintenance is not in place, it starts looking unappealing, attracts dirt, and harbors mold and mildew.

The amount of time spent cleaning, and the maintenance method employed in taking care of boat surfaces will rely on the kind of deck flooring in use.

Maintaining Pontoon Decks

Improper maintenance leads to deterioration of all boat parts and components, and the pontoon deck is not left out.  The deck is an important part of pontoon boats, therefore, requires holistic maintenance. This is crucial and non-negotiable. Some basic routine maintenance for pontoon decks include:

  • Periodic cleaning with a brush across the grain eliminates most dirt effortlessly. Also, simple soap and water are a decent choice for a superior clean. In addition, fresh water should not be standing on teak floors as they are the top reason for mold and mildew growth.
  • Avoid using acid to clean wood floors as it destroys the pulp and weakens the boat floor’s water and UV-resistant properties.
  • Pontoon deck covering gets stained easily. Therefore, the quicker the stains are detected, the easier it is to clear them off, from hand scrubbing to using a power wash are all effective means of stain removal in pontoon deck covering.

Final words

Aside from supporting pontoon boat’s structure and components, pontoon decks add beauty and class to pontoon boats. In addition, pontoon decks also determine the stability and strength of boats on the water. However, there are many types in the market; choosing the one that fits the specific purpose, size of the boat, and water body is very important.

Pontoon Boat Seating

July 11, 2017 by Dan

While considering a new pontoon boat, selecting the right floor plan and number of seats is an important aspect that must be considered. There are multiple configuration options available for pontoon boat seating that enable an individual to choose one that best fits their needs. While making their choice, being knowledgeable of a few facts can assist them in deciding upon the right seating.

Different types of Seating Configurations

There are different types of pontoon boat seating configurations that depend on the length of the boat, the layout of floor plan and the purpose of the boat. Every configuration will include a sole helm chair that is installed at the console and is meant for the person who will be steering the boat. The other seats and benches to be installed will depend on a few factors.

Depending on the length of the boat

Boat length is one of the main factor that affects the seating. Boats with small length will have less space for installation of seats and hence will accommodate less passengers. On the other hand, large boats can be fitted with more seats and benches and will house more people. While buying a boat, a person can choose a length that will enable them to install seating that is adequate depending on number of people they expect to come aboard.

Depending on layout of floor plan

The floor plan will play a part in the seating configuration of the boat. For smaller sized boats, the pontoon boat seating will generally accommodate 5 to 9 people with the floorplan enabling installation of a couple of benches at front or rear and another placed parallel to the helm seat. Boats that are medium or large sized may have floorplans that allow fitting of a couple of benches at bow and another couple at stern with ability to seat 10 to 15 passengers. The larger boats may even have a bench parallel to the helm chair that could enable one or two more passengers to come on board.

Depending on purpose the boat is going to be used for

A boat designed for fishing may have pontoon boat seating with special foldable chairs at the bow of the boat each of which can be occupied by a single person. The stern of the boat may also include more fishing chairs or may have regular lounges or benches for accommodating multiple passengers. The benches may even be modified to create space for installation of livewells as well as storage compartments for fishing equipment.

Individuals whose main purpose is to have a relaxing time on the water, may opt for reclining lounge seats that can be converted into beds when fully reclined. These maybe electric and allow individuals to sun bathe and have a few serene moments all to themselves. These are generally installed at the stern of the pontoon boat and generally a boat can accommodate two of these at maximum.

For entertaining quite a few guests or having family reunions an individual will require a pontoon boat seating that can seat maximum number of guests. The person can opt for installing benches both at bow and stern end to accommodate as many people as possible. Benches may be installed at opposite ends with tables in between them and the configuration might extend into an L-shaped setting.

July 11, 2017 by Dan

Today’s pontoon boats are no less than a super luxurious living room. The boats come equipped with premium quality upholstery and furniture that is comfortable and aesthetically appealing. There are different types of pontoon furniture options available that can be added into the boat for making it fully functional.

Seats

One of the most important and integral component of pontoon furniture are seats. There are different types of seat configurations available for installation on a pontoon boat.

Helm Seat

The helm seat of a pontoon boat is meant for the person that maneuvers the boat. This is placed in front of the console or steering and has a swiveling design to allow the person to control the boat easily by rotating the seat. They have an adequate comfort level to ensure that the person can steer the boat for long durations without feeling fatigued.

Passenger Seats

The passengers on a pontoon boat can be accommodated on various bench seats and lounges. These can seat multiple persons and come in different designs to suit the floorplan of the boat. A few types of these include L-shaped lounges, chaise lounges and rounded corner seats.

Tables

While choosing pontoon furniture a person may consider installation of tables. These can fulfill a variety of purposes that include serving of food and other items, placing objects and bags, being used as a surface for playing board games and laying down maps for course plotting. There maybe also be storage space under them for coolers and wine chillers as well as cup holders on top surface. Tables may have pedestals to install them or may even be fitted with mounts onto the deck. Some tables are removable and can be installed at multiple places on the boat as needed.

Cup Holders

Cup holders are the most overlooked items when it comes to pontoon furniture. These are especially important for people who will have children on board the boat or will be hosting parties for guests on their pontoons. While having fun on the water body, a few bottles of wines or even soft drinks will be opened and it is quite difficult to hold the glasses or cups in hand all the time. There are different brands that manufacture cup holders for boats. These are available as separate mobile pieces or can be embedded into other furniture items such as arms of chairs and lounges. Some cup holders even have inbuilt cooling option that can keep the beverages chilled.

Bars and Stools

For people who like to host a lot of parties on their boats, a bar and stools for it can be a highly useful pontoon furniture item. These enable serving of drinks, have storage space for glasses and bottles and make hosting a party easier. Before installing these, the boat owner must ensure that there is adequate space available on the boat.

Storage Compartment

An important aspect to consider while choosing the pontoon furniture is the amount of storage space. Some manufacturers ensure that the pieces of furniture that are built by them have inbuilt storage spaces. These are great for holding items such as bags, fishing equipment, clothes and even installation of livewells, coolers and other equipment.
