Pontoon Boat Grills 101

June 5, 2017 by Dan

Nothing beats spending the day on the waters on the perfect pontoon boat, not forgetting the cinematic views and good fresh air, except having the perfect pontoon boat grill to go with everything is the cherry on top. Best pontoon boat grills are hard to find because many people usually purchase weak and land favoured grills, There are excellent grills on the market that are specifically constructed for toons with square rail mounts, and there are also some grills with a short life span. Best pontoon boat grills, stay lit even when the pontoon boat is mobile, quickly and easily attach securely to the square railing, and not forgetting, strong and rust free after using it.

When purchasing a pontoon boat grill, one must first decide whether to go for a gas, charcoal or electric grill ( it’s said that a charcoal grill gives the food better flavour while a gas grill is more convenient). A gas grill  comes in two shapes, a rectangular and circular shape. A rectangular grill has more space for food, thus, making it perfect for multiple gathering, it can easily mounted any side of the pontoon boat. Circular grills another great choice that be doubled like an oven or stove.

Using a charcoal grill adds a special flavor to meats, and the grill is very affordable . Its advised buy one with a mount that attaches to the boat’s handrail or rod holder and positions the grill over the water, so that that any hot ashes or embers will fall overboard instead of adding damage and maintenance to on the boat deck.

Gas grills start up and heat up quickly, compared to charcoal, which can be challenging to ignite and usually takes 15 – 20 minutes before it’s ready to cook on. Propane grills present no dangers from burning agents, and they don’t produce messy ash which makes it easier to clean after using it.

Just like propane grills, electric grills start heating instantly, and they don’t produce embers nor ashes. Another advantage of electric grills is that they cook without flames, which gives them the upper hand when compared to the other two grill types, so you can use them in marinas that prohibit the use of open flames. One big disadvantage is that they require a source of A/C power. Unless one has a generator onboard which is rare, you’re only  limited to cooking where shore power is available.

A few precautions one has to take when owning a grill are:

  • Position or mount the grill at the side  so that no ashes or embers can fall on the pontoon boat.
  • Use only charcoal lighter fluid as an accelerant, and apply it only before you          light the coals. Never use gasoline, and never apply lighter fluid after the fire has started.
  • Do not dump ashes or coals overboard when you’re done cooking. The cover of the grill is designed to kill the fire and keep the ashes contained until you return to shore, where you can dispose of them safely after giving them plenty of time to ensure they are completely dead.
